Green Playground

A couple of weeks ago we built a playground in one day. OK-not by ourselves but with 200+ other community volunteers. We started at 8:30AM and finished at 2:30PM. It was the most fun I've had in a group in years. Volunteers of ages, races, lifestyles, physical capacities and economic levels pitched in to cart mulch, mix concrete, put the pieces of the playground together, landscape and more. There was plenty of food--breakfast and lunch--and enough water to keep us all hydrated. The music was pumping up-tempo oldies, r&b, country, pop. Like I said it was great and at the end of the day, we celebrated with a ribbon cutting. I followed that celebration with a long soak in a hot-tub--not very green but very beneficial to my blackboomer body.
It was an exhilarating experience and I recommend it to everyone. Find a group in your city and pitch in to improve the community you call home. What's going on where you live?

Green-ups for the First Family

Our "Green " President and family scores again. The White House will has its first vegetable garden since Eleanor Roosevelt's Victory Garden after World War II, and the first ever organic vegetable garden. Mrs. Obama is putting some elbow grease behind her plan to promote a healthier diet and education about organic vegetables among the children in our country. I have a tough time growing basil myself but have dreams of growing edibles for my table. Community based gardens are sprouting up in communities around the country--Atlanta, Chicago, Cincinnati. Is this a step toward reclaiming our health from the ravages of grease and salt? Is freedom from/for chickens in our future? What's happening in your town or backyard?

Being smarter=Being greener

Beyonce said President Obama 'makes me want to be smarter. Makes me want to do more'. Me, too and taking it a step farther, our first 'green' president makes me want to be greener. I'm a black boomer and proud of it. We reinvented war protests, popular music, blackness and aging (just to name a few). We can and must handle being black and being green. Because green is black and always has been.
